The drawing documents the artist's enthusiasm with heroic gestures and dynamic movement, inspired by classical antiquity seen during his sojourn in Rome, 1816-1817. The drawing is one of a group of sketches of similar subjects referred to as the Gigantomachy or Battle of the Titans.
