August Lucas, together with Johann Heinrich Schilbach, studied from 1818 at the Drawing Academy in Darmstadt where he was influenced by Carl Philipp and Daniel Fohr. In 1825 he worked with Peter Cornelius in Munich. In 1829, Lucas is in Italy, befriends Joseph Anton Koch and perseveres in the drawing style of Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld.
