Johann Gottlieb Hantzsch, student at the Dresden academy since 1811, spent his professional career in Dresden, concentrating on a particular domestic style of genre painting.
His influence on Ludwig Richter, recently returned from a long period in Italy, was considerable.
The two artists were friends: Richter engraved several paintings by Hantzsch between 1833-36.

Works by Hantzsch are found in the Nationalgalerie, Berlin, in the Speck v. Sternburg Collection in the Leipzig Museum and in the Albertinum Dresden.
