(Angers 1788 - 1856 Paris)

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1829

Medallion, Bronze
Diameter 21,8 cm
Signed and dated: "GOETHE, DAVID, WEIMAR, 1829"

The sculptor David d´Angers was known for his medallions of great contemporary personalities. Long enthusiastic about Goethe, they met on 24 August 1829 in Weimar and David d´Angers convinced him to model for him. The result was a larger-than-life bust (Musée d´Orsay, Paris; Duchess Anna Amalia Library, Weimar) and this medallion. In addition to Goethe, David d'Angers in Weimar was particularly interested in his relationship with Carl Gustav Carus and through him his encounter with Caspar David Friedrich.
