Shortly after the death of Joseph Heintz the Elder (1609) Matthias Gundelach was appointed as his successor imperial court painter to Rudolph II in Prague. He had previously worked closely with Heintz, after whose death he married the widow Regina and became the guardian and teacher of the sons Joseph (II) and Ferdinand Heintz.
According to ?t?pán Vácha (Institute of Art History, Czech Academy of Sciences, Department of Early Modern Art, Prague), the figure in the upper right holding a lamp is a self portrait of Matthias Gundelach and not as previously assumed Joseph Heintz the Elder.
